EV charger home survey: what the electrician checks

Booking an EV charger home survey is an important step before installation. It gives the electrician a clear view of your property, electrical system and daily charging needs, helping them recommend a safe and suitable installation rather than relying on assumptions.

What happens during an EV charger survey

The electrician will talk through where you park, where you would like the charger fitted and how you expect to use it. They will then inspect the route from your electricity supply to the proposed charger position, checking whether the installation can be completed neatly and safely.

The survey also identifies any work needed before the charger is installed. For example, a long cable route, detached garage or older fuseboard may need a different approach, but these are common issues that can usually be resolved with careful planning.

Checking the charger position and cable route

The proposed location should be convenient for plugging in while allowing the cable to be protected from vehicles, garden equipment and general foot traffic. The electrician will consider the parking position, the length of the charging lead and whether the charger can be mounted on an external wall, garage or suitable post.

They will plan the cable route back to the consumer unit, looking at walls, loft spaces, floors, driveways and outbuildings. A long route may require additional containment or a more suitable cable size. If the garage is detached, the cable may need to run underground in suitable ducting, with the route planned to protect it from damage and moisture.

  • The distance between the consumer unit and charger

  • Whether the cable can be concealed or needs external containment

  • Any walls, paving or garden areas that affect the route

  • Safe access for drilling, lifting or underground installation

Reviewing your home’s electrical supply

Your consumer unit is the central point where circuits are protected and supplied with electricity. The electrician will check whether there is a suitable spare way for the EV charger circuit and whether the existing board is in a condition that can safely accept the additional equipment.

An older fuseboard may have limited space, outdated protection or no room for a dedicated charger circuit. In that situation, the electrician may recommend a consumer unit or fuseboard upgrade. This is not simply an administrative requirement: a modern board can provide the correct protection and leave the installation easier to inspect and maintain.

Understanding RCD, RCBO and other protection

An RCD is a safety device that can disconnect the electricity quickly if it detects current flowing where it should not, helping reduce the risk of electric shock. An RCBO combines this type of protection with circuit overload protection, giving the EV charger its own protected circuit.

Electric vehicle charging can also require additional protection, depending on the charger design and the manufacturer’s instructions. Some chargers include built-in DC fault detection, while others need an additional protective device. Your electrician will check the charger specification and select protection that meets current wiring requirements without adding unnecessary equipment.

Safety checks and electrical capacity

Earthing and bonding checks confirm that exposed metalwork and incoming services are connected correctly to the home’s protective system. These checks are particularly useful in older properties, where electrical work may have been carried out over several decades or records may be incomplete.

The electrician will also consider the property’s available electrical capacity. A charger can draw a substantial amount of power, so the assessment may include the main supply, existing high-demand appliances and whether charging could coincide with cooking, heating or other heavy usage.

This does not automatically mean that your home needs a larger electricity supply. A suitable charger may use dynamic load management, which adjusts its charging rate when the property is using more electricity. The electrician can explain whether this is appropriate for your home and how it could help avoid overloading the supply.

Confirming smart charging suitability

If you want app-based scheduling, timed charging or access to energy tariffs, the survey will also consider the charger’s smart features. The electrician may check mobile signal or Wi-Fi availability at the proposed location, depending on how the charger connects.

You should mention any preferences for off-peak charging, solar integration or monitoring through an app. Confirming these requirements early helps ensure the recommended charger will support the functions you actually plan to use.

Get ready for your survey

A little preparation can make the appointment more productive. Take clear photos before the electrician arrives and make sure the relevant areas are accessible, including the meter, consumer unit, parking space and proposed charger position.

  • Photographs of the electricity meter, consumer unit and proposed charger location

  • Notes about parking arrangements, gates, access restrictions or a detached garage

  • Details of solar panels, battery storage or other major electrical equipment

  • Questions about charger type, cable appearance, smart charging and future expansion

If you do not know when the wiring was last inspected, ask whether an EICR or electrical testing for your home would be sensible before the charger installation. This can provide a clearer picture of the existing installation and identify issues that may otherwise delay the work.

Arrange your next step

A home survey gives you a practical installation plan, highlights any constraints early and helps ensure the final charger setup is safe, tidy and suitable for everyday use. It also gives you the opportunity to make informed decisions before any installation work begins.
